About the area

North Uist offers activities for the active and passive holidaymaker.  The Uist Outdoor Centre offers a range of sporting activities including canoeing, surfing, abseiling, etc.  If you prefer a more relaxing holiday you can enjoy the wonderful unspoilt scenery of North Uist with its magnificent range of bird life.  You can visit the Balranald Nature Reserve on the west side of the island where you may be able to see such birds as the Corncrake, Curlew, Elder Ducks, Gannets, Whopper, Mute Swans or Greylag Geese and on the hills of North Uist you may even spot the Golden Eagle.

There is a resident herd of deer on North Uist.  Seals are common and Otters can be seen on North Uist.  On a nice clear day you can see the islands of St Kilda from the West Coast of Uist.  North Uist has a vast number of Trout and Salmon lochs where you can fish on a daily or weekly permit, which can be purchased from the North Uist Estate Office in Lochmaddy or telephone 01876500329. Boat hire can also be arranged for most of the lochs.

LOCAL SHOPS

The grocery shop, petrol pumps, souvenier and craft shops are situated within a ¼ mile of the both properties.  The Co-op at Sollas (9 miles) is well stocked and has off licence facilities.  The Hebridean Smokehouse offers excellent smoked salmon, scallops, etc and is situated at Clachan (8 miles).  All North Uist shops are closed on Sundays.

The Lochmaddy Hotel is a 5 minute walk from the cottage and a 1 minute saunter from Tigh A Chidhe!  The Hotel has a friendly atmosphere and provides a good selection of Bar Meals for either lunchtime or in the Evenings. The Tigh Dearg Hotel is also a 5 minute walk from both properties and has a fully equipped gym, Sauna and Steam Room which is open to non-residents.  The hotel has a bar lounge and dining room where you can enjoy a relaxing meal. TAIGH CHEARSABHAGH

Opened in 1995, Taigh Chearsabhagh Arts Centre is situated across the road from the Lochmaddy Hotel.  It is a 200 year old hotel that was converted into a Museum, Art Exhibition Centre, it also boasts a well stocked Giftshop and Café.  Check out their website for event and exhibitions – www.taigh-chearsabhagh.org
